I stare dumbfounded as the bag is snatched, flailing uselessly as I try and get them back [d20 rolled a 6] "Hey! Give those back! They aren't any kind of spoils you'd care about anyway!"

"Actually, I do care." Retiaria replied with a resigned sigh as she pulled her hand from the bag, opening it to reveal a small handful of alchemical pills. "I'm worried about you, Oric. We all are. It's like you're addicted to these things, it's not right..."

I blush and look away, embarrassment mixing with sadness consuming my face "I'm not addicted! It's just... it's not so bad being something else is it?" I turn to the floor and speak quietly, not really wanting anyone to hear "If you take one you'll be useful for sure, what's wrong with wanting that?"

"Because you're you! You're not just some thing for people to use! Trust me, I know what that's like and I will never go back to that life! You're a fucking dwarf, Oric! Where's your pride in who you are?"
The vehemence in Retiaria's voice was probably surprising to all, maybe even herself. But it was just so offensive to her that someone could take their individuality, their personhood, so lightly.

I stand up, a sudden fire in my eyes "It's because I'm a fucking dwarf! It's because of who I am! You're strong and confident, so of course you don't know what it's like to hate what you are! You might have been in a shitty situation, but situations change. Who I am, where I come from, my history, I'd give up plenty of myself as long as that stuff changed to!"

"Didn't some smart fucker say 'those who forget the past are cursed to repeat it'? I don't know your background, Oric. I don't know what shitty thing you did that makes you think you're worth so little. But fuck, who would you be without it? That shit life of yours, it made you who you are. Own it! You know it was bad, and you try and be a good person to try and make up for it. You don't just try and throw it all away! You've got a bad past? You did some shit you regret? Fucking face up to it, you coward!"

I scowl, fists squeezing tight as I shake slightly, then reach into my bag and pull out an ornate metal object with an intricate symbol carved into it. A family crest of some unknown family, the importance of which is only conveyed by the quality of the emblem. This delicate, important looking emblem is then hurled at Reteria with minimal force, but enough to leave a small red mark if it hit. The edge of the emblem has been crudely sharpened, and the back is stained with blood "There, if you think being me's so great take that and give it a shot yourself! That's right, I'm a coward! I know the Loth family should have died out a long time ago, but I don't want to die! So I ran away and tried to be useful to someone for once in my life, to be the one being used rather than the one using others! You say you were owned, are you telling me if one of the assholes who looked down on you traded places with you, you wouldn't be happy?!"

The sigil hit Retiaria in the face. It wasn't a hard blow, but it was enough to make her clap a hand to her cheek and swear in Infernal. "For fuck's sake..." she muttered, then replied "Of course I fucking would, that's not the point! You're trying to change your life, to make yourself better. And sure, throw away your family name if that makes you feel better. But don't throw away your self. You don't want to die? If you take those pills and become something else, if you get stuck like that you might as well be dead. You'll just be some thing, waiting to be used by whoever grabs you. Don't matter if it's us, some innocent villager or some utter bastard like the gnolls. You'd just be happy to be of use! But if you stay as yourself, you get to choose. You can actually do some good in the world. But fuck it, whatever. You want to give up so much, take your damn pills. Have fun with 'em."

She dropped the pills at Oric's feet and walked away, shaking her head.

I frown and look down at the pills on the ground... I feel bad but I'm not wrong! Right? But can I really afford to hold on to this, even for a short while? "Do you know the basic principles behind safe zones? There's a core item or feature that exerts an aura of certainty. Within that aura the world stays stable. The instability is what we call the Wild. The Loth family was in control of a crystal that did just that. They claimed that the crystal needed to be maintained, and only the Loth family could do it. In exchange for maintaining the crystal they forced everyone to serve them. We were given anything and everything we asked for, even when it cost people their lives. A wandering cleric used a spell to force my father to tell the truth, and the town found out the crystal would continue to protect the town without anyone doing anything... I was able to get away after a couple days, but I've always felt like I should have stayed and let them have their way with me until the end. To pay them back for everything I and my family did. Giving in and becoming something of service is sort of like a second chance to do that."

Duran listened carefully with concern as Red and Oric argued over Oric's actions. When the red one had enough and stormed off, Duran whispered to herself a short prayer. "Oh Aircame, grant me the power to protect she who fights herself..." The dragonborn stepped forward and bended over, picking up the pills on the ground and holding them in her hand while she straighten up and looked at Oric. No moment does she actively move the pills away. They are still there, in case Oric really wants them.

"You could go and be an object forever, pleasing the few that decide to use you. You could go back to your estate and accept the cruel fate that befell your family to satisfy those that were betrayed.... but that would only help or please the few. But Retiera is right. You have so much more you can do, Oric. Including defy what your family became known for. I've seen your kindness and... uh.. felt how caring you are. You can be more then the selfishness your family has committed and help so far much more as yourself then any object could. That second chance you want? It's here, right now. In every action you take from here on. Not in being some object."

The dragonborn paused a bit, giving a smile of reassurance. "I.. might not be the best at it, but I can help ya know, guide you if you need in any help, Oric. I had worked  in the temple and know quite a bit on Aircame's teachings." Duran offered as she started to close the hand that held the pills if they were not yet taken. "I want to see you do your best."

Gwyn stood off to the side letting them all debate. She wasn't exactly interested into joining the discuss. Instead she thought about the pills she took and was carrying herself, in addition to the ones she was 'holding' for Retiaria. They could be really useful, or fun. She still wasn't going to be getting rid of them soon. But she was also noticing this was starting to become a bit of an issue with Oric. Thinking on it she did want to say something.

"Oric, alot of us are looking to write our own new stories. This is your chance to choose your adventure. I just don't think the cleric that was bragging about being the only healer would want to be on the sidelines as an object while the rest of us free this place from their goblin based tyranny. Put the pills away for now. Besides I'm sure something will show up to transform you soon enough by going on the adventure."

Naethra stayed silent as she watched Red and Oric fight.  Oric had been perceptive enough to notice the discrepancy in her magic, but had chosen not to press the point.  Now she knew why.

She felt like she ought to say something, but couldn't really think of anything constructive to add.  She was intimately familiar with shameful heritage, and couldn't fault the dwarf for seeking freedom from the sins of her forbearers.  It could be a terrible burden, born with every waking step and breath, and Red had no perception of it what so ever.

But, at the same time, inanimate oblivion seemed like the worst possible way to cope.  She shuddered at her memory of her time as a tankard.  Had they destroyed the goblins that supped from her?  She sincerely hoped so.  The memory of their lips on her rim made her feel filthy.  But Oric... She had had a different experience entirely.

Naethra shuffled a bit, feeling distinctly awkward and so.show wrong.  She looked at her green hand, absent the claws she had spent so much of her life grinding down to suitable nail size.

"If you want out,  now's the time," she finally murmured.  "Things are going to get worse.  We likely won't survive what's ahead.  Everyone is terrified of the gnoll, and one way or another she will move to stop us.  If you take those pills and loose yourself in a cushion or chair or some such... well, whatever you become might be happy.  We could probably replace you.  Those gems we've looted might make a villager into something approaching a good fighter."

She sighed, looking at her smooth green fingers again.  "But I can think of better ways to find absolution.  An new body is... something very big, and it doesn't seem to work out as well you'd hope..."

She sighed.  "I miss my tail," she said to no one in particular.

I sigh, cautiously taking the bag from Duran "I get it... I'm sorry for my outburst. But I don't think enjoying time as an object is so wrong if you're able to maintain your sense of self. When I was a chair, it was hard to keep hold of myself. But when I became a robe for Duran... I had a desire to hold her and keep her warm, but I was still me. I think that with experience and caution it can be something fun, informative, and more importantly helpful. I'm a cleric now, not a spoiled aristocrat. It's my job to take care of those around me, and to keep all of you safe. I promise not to use these pills as an escape, but we have the method of reversion and I won't hide from it if it's helpful to use them." Looking down at the bag in my hand a thought occurs to me "Wait..." I pull out the reversion serum and set it aside for easy access, then quickly down a pill. I focus on my old body, that of a male dwarf. I don't try and exaggerate anything, I try and focus on each detail with meticulous focus.

Gwyn put a hand on Naethra's shoulder hearing her comment about the tail.

Watching Oric, her expression turn to an defeated annoyance as she watched Oric take the pill without knowing why she was doing so, but assuming that she was going to be a really well constructed chair.

"Welp, I'm going to blacksmith to see if she can make my tiara into a necklace, the tiara seems in bad taste at the moment. Maybe see if she can get me a little more protection. Let's all meet back here to depart in 2 hours?" she announced to the room. She went to exit the room/building. She lingered just long enough incase there was an urgent reply. Otherwise, she wasn't too worried. The village wasn't that big, she could find everyone if she needed to, and she said where she was going.

Retiaria offered Naethra a sad smile when she commented on the loss of her tail. She didn't like the ex-tiefling too much, but imagining what she'd feel in her place she could certainly be sympathetic.

Shaking her head at Oric's foolishness, she exited the building with Gwen. A smith would probably have tools for repairing stuff...
