Sketch – 01 – Hulk

I’ve been trying to find a little time here and there to practice my drawing skills and get them back up to par. I’ll share with you when ever I finish a small drawing.

Today is a sketch I did during the last comic con while I was sitting at my table to promote the photos. I was always amused by those old Hostess Fruit Pie ads they used to put in the comics.

10 Best DA Art for 2008

Every year I like to look back at all the artwork that other people have made on DeviantArt and choose my personal 10 favorite pieces to help get some more attention for these talented artists. This year I decided to post it here on the blog. Also It helps me stall until I get new artwork to share. Hope you enjoy.

10. Bizarro

Marcelo Di Chiara drew this great rendition of Bizarro from the Superman comics. It has some great lines through out it, as well as some nice damaged textures in the background. Also Bizzaro attempting the classic Superman glasses disguise is just amusing.

9. Trick or Treat

I featured this artwork from Jose Johann Jaro (aka lazeedog) earlier in the year for Halloween and I still really love it. The expressions on the kids faces are priceless. The details in this work really stand out to me, like the Star Wars Pillowcase, and the poor knock off quality of the Wonder Woman costume.

5. Something Wicked This Way Comes

As a photographer I don’t tend to look at that much photography as much as I look at comic books, drawings and paiLea Biljman here. It has a great mood, great colors and light, and has something beautifully retro and classic about it as well.

4. Pirates vs. Ninjas

Pirates vs. Ninjas has been one of those ongoing internet debates/memes. I’m endlessly amused on how detailed an illustration Roboworks makes of the whole things. It takes a lot of time to makes those details so be sure to click to look at it in full size.

3. Superman

There is seemingly nothing extraordinary about Dan Panosian’s Superman. But it’s crisp lines, bold colors, and pure elegance in it’s simplicity (thank you Middleman for that line!) that really make this image stand out and a great work of pop art.

2. Point99

I love the mix of the very unique hand drawn creatures interacting with real word objects in this photo by Lora (whom’s last name I can’t seem to locate. ) I had it up as my wall paper for a long time. It kinda creeped out some people who saw it.

1. Wolverine vs. T-Rex Parts 1 & 2

wolverine_vs_t_rex_by_njoo

Ok, so the number 1 piece is actually two paintings, but they come together well as one work. Andrew Hou admits to painting the first one on a whim not really having any idea how Wolveirne could win. A while later the second image appeared on his site. I’m very amused by both and the quality is suprub. I’d personally love to be able to get a print to hang on the wall.

I Can’t See Her!

Time for superheroes once again. Tofay we have a shot of the Invisible Woman from the Fantastic Four. One of the big things I wanted to do in this image was to let her put her hands infront of her and be partical invisible so we can see through them to the rest of her. Seemed to be something no one else really did much of in photo manipulations.

I still have more experimenting I want to do with this image, but I like this enough to share it.

The Black Cat

Couple weekends ago MM had a weekend challenge to do a night shoot. I’ve liked the idea of the weekend challenge, but enever really got the chance to participate, so I took this weekend and ran with it. After working at the costume shop I took Renee and with some help shot her as Marvel’s Black Cat outside of the store. Enjoy.

Mid-Ohio : Con Sketches!

I like to get sketches at that shows I hit up. And though I’d share some of the ones I picked up at the Mid-Ohio show. Now, if you don’t have the space to show them all here, but I really did love all the ones my neighbors were kind enough to make for me. Also some just didn’t scan in very well, cause the person under them went really dark.

At the show I gave all of the artists a list of possible themes to draw, so they could be creative and have some fun. I’ll let you know what the themes they chose when we get there.

I’ll start off with Andy Price. The man has been at the cons doing sketches for as long as I can remember. I get a kick out of the style and he does some fun stuff. He also used to draw the Quantum Leap comic book. I’ve been tempted to ask for a Sam Becket sketch. Anyways, Andy’s choice for the Mid-Ohio show was “A Comic Book Character set in an other Time Period” for which he drew 1950′s Batgirl. Also at the Chicago show Andy drew a Girl Gambit.

Next we have Comfort Love. Her and her artist husband do a self publish comic series called The Uniquies. Comfort took the option of “Awkward Teenage Verson of Any Character” and gave us a super emo Raven. Also I’m including her Girl Gambit from Chicago (was the popular theme there).

Now we have a sketch from Adam Withers. He works on the Uniquies comic with his wife, Comfort. He also took the “Awkward Teenage Verson of Any Character” and gave us Power Girl.

There were a bunch of the comic pros at the show. Alan Davis, Joe Kubert, etc. But the one I wanted to see and was excited to get a sketch from was Chris Giarrusso. Chris draws Mini-Marvels and did short Bullpin comic strips in the back of the Marvel comics. Chris seemed stumped for a long time sitting there staring at the blank page, but ultimately took the “gender swapped X-Men” option and gave us a Girl Cyclops.

All for now. If I get a chance I’ll see if I can share more later on.

Comic Panels – Masters of Disguise

Over the years I’ve been collecting various comic panels on my computer that I particularly found interesting or amusing. I’ll be posting groups of them into the blog to share with you. Unfortunately I did not write down what comics these are from, nor do I outstanding comics knowledge to find out on my own. So, if you like one of the comics I can’t give credit where credit is due. I’ll try to get better about referencing that in the future.

This is the first week of Comic Panels, and the theme is going to focusing on heroes donning a clever and cunning disguise.

I admittedly have no idea what happened here. I’m assuming it’s JLA book. That had to be one hell of a food fight. I think most bachelor parties have less confusing after affects and better reason to not remember how you ended up wearing strange items.

This is from Wolverine’s current ongoing title. Some reason he felt that dressing up in a giant fursuit of a wolverine would be scarier then how he normally looks?

I love this one. Cause he actually thinks the hat is the brilliant disguise to hide the rest of the bright red costume.

It’s Full of Supers!

I’m planning on going to the Mid-Ohio con in Columbus this October. I’m waiting on a pay check to book the table, but the planning is going on.

At the show I’m going to have prints of several images, a comic book I wrote called “Liberty and Justice”, and a ‘sketchbook’ containing alot of images that will be offered as prints. Since it’s a comic book convention I’m focusing on more comic related shots.

Between now and October I’m going to shoot 4 more comic characters for the book. So far I’m prepping shoots for Shadowcat (Kitty Pryde), Beast, and Dazzler. I’m going to shoot one other, but not decided on who.

Here is a list of characters I’m considering for a shoot. I’d love some feedback of preferences in the comments area.

+ Rogue
+ Ms. Marvel
+ Rogue vs. Ms. Marvel
+ Catwoman
+ Nightcrawler
+ Black Cat

Or do I shoot them all?

Wizard World Chicago Costumes – Part 1

Over the weekend was the Wizard World Chicago 2008 comic book convention. I decided to bring the camera along and take of photos of all the people who dress up for the show. There were a lot of great costumes so I’m going to need to break this up into several posts throughout the week.

Since this was a comic book convention I’ll start off by showing some of the comic themed costumes.

Spiral

Marvel villain Mojo

Rogue and Professor X

Mr. Sinister

Catwoman and Mary Marvel

Joker and Rogue

Thor

Superman

Colossus

Nightcrawler

X-Men : Wolverine, Storm, unknown, X-23, and a Raccoon City Cop

A Tour of Wizard World Chicago

This past weekend one of the largest comic book conventions in the country took place in Chicago. I’ve attended the Wizard World Chicago convention for the last 9 years. 5 of those years I was attending as a fan and the other 4 I was attending as an exhibitor selling my comic book and photography. Most of my family and friends know I go to this show, but they don’t really know what goes on over the weekend. This past show I decided to take my camera with and take some images to help give an idea of what the Wizard World convention is like.

I’m going to start at the beginning. Here is an image of what you would see when first entering the show.

All of the big comic books companies (Marvel, DC, Image, etc.) set up booths right at the front doors to promote any upcoming movies, large comic events, and hold signings by some of the most popular artists and writers who work on their books. Farther in the distance are smaller booths for independent comic book publishers and an autograph area with minor celebs like Lou Ferrigno, Johnny Fairplay and any number of former pro wrestler and/or star wars actors.

The next major area at the convention are the vendors. Half the show floor is dominated by a variety of booths selling comic books, movie posters, toys, swords, knives, bootleg movies, patches, collectibles, t-shirts and much much more. The show tends to not focus on comic books, and covers pop culture, science-fiction, and cult tv/movies.

Fans looking through boxes of comics.

Variety of t-shirts on display.

Pez at one of the collectible booths.

The last section on the main floor is Artist Alley. This is where a variety of professional and aspiring artists come to sell their art, comic books, prints, and to do commissions and sketches. Personally this is my favorite area of the show. There is wealth of talent here, and a great opportunity to chit chat with the artists and find new things.

By now you’ve walked around for a couple hours. Hunger is setting in. There are several places around the show to buy over priced, poorly cooked food that’s been sitting out under the heat lamp too long. Best to bring your own food.

Ok, I’m bringing up the food just to show that photo of storm troopers eating. We thought it was amusing. At any show you can pretty much expect to see a small army of storm troopers walking the floor.

Along with the storm troopers there are lots of people in costume. Just an other reason I love to go to this show. I’ve gone in costume several times in the past. It’s a blast. Although it’s a bit difficult to get around the show if you have a really cool outfit because people will stop and take your photo every 20 feet. There are a lot of people dressed up this year. I took a ton of photos of people I saw in costume this year, and I’ll be putting those up in the next few parts.

After all of this we have more show! In an other section of the convention center there are a lectures, discussion groups, and movies held in a series of ballrooms. I didn’t take any photos of these, I don’t normally head to this area of the show. Outside the ballrooms is a signing area. this is where they hold signing for some of the top names in the comics business. The line of people waiting to get a signature from painter Alex Ross is below.
