037 – Harley Sketch
Quick entry of my neighbor at Summit City Comic Con, Jesse Garza, drawing a sketch of Harley Quinn.
011 – SPACE

This morning I drove back from Ohio and traveled through three states. Did I take any cool photos from that? No. Instead we have an image of the sign in my apartment that keeps my schedule.
SPACE Con
By the time this posts I’ll already be on the road heading to Columbus, OH. I’ll be at SPACE comic show promoting my online comic SHIFT. I’ll also be selling hard copies of the first 2 issues, copies of the short story Liberty and Justice, and I’ll have some select photo prints available as well. I’m at table 92. So if you are in the area be sure to stop byand say hi.
Visit the SPACE website for more info.
002 – C2E2

I went to C2E2 as a fan today. It was a nice show. Lots of great guests and cool stuff to look at. I got a couple sketches while I was there that I might share with you all later on. For my daily photo I got my friend Tom Kelly working on a sketch/paint commission of a super-heroic Hello Kitty. When he’s not drawing that at a show he does some great illustration work that you can check out here.

Every year I hit the Chicago Comic-Con (formerly Wizard World Chicago) and one of the things I love to do there is get sketches from the people in artist alley. We like to give thema bit of a challenge and make a list of random concepts for them to draw. So I thought I would share some of the wonderful work I got from the talented people this year.

Mid-Ohio : Con Sketches!
I like to get sketches at that shows I hit up. And though I’d share some of the ones I picked up at the Mid-Ohio show. Now, if you don’t have the space to show them all here, but I really did love all the ones my neighbors were kind enough to make for me. Also some just didn’t scan in very well, cause the person under them went really dark.
At the show I gave all of the artists a list of possible themes to draw, so they could be creative and have some fun. I’ll let you know what the themes they chose when we get there.
I’ll start off with Andy Price. The man has been at the cons doing sketches for as long as I can remember. I get a kick out of the style and he does some fun stuff. He also used to draw the Quantum Leap comic book. I’ve been tempted to ask for a Sam Becket sketch. Anyways, Andy’s choice for the Mid-Ohio show was “A Comic Book Character set in an other Time Period” for which he drew 1950′s Batgirl. Also at the Chicago show Andy drew a Girl Gambit.

Next we have Comfort Love. Her and her artist husband do a self publish comic series called The Uniquies. Comfort took the option of “Awkward Teenage Verson of Any Character” and gave us a super emo Raven. Also I’m including her Girl Gambit from Chicago (was the popular theme there).

Now we have a sketch from Adam Withers. He works on the Uniquies comic with his wife, Comfort. He also took the “Awkward Teenage Verson of Any Character” and gave us Power Girl.

There were a bunch of the comic pros at the show. Alan Davis, Joe Kubert, etc. But the one I wanted to see and was excited to get a sketch from was Chris Giarrusso. Chris draws Mini-Marvels and did short Bullpin comic strips in the back of the Marvel comics. Chris seemed stumped for a long time sitting there staring at the blank page, but ultimately took the “gender swapped X-Men” option and gave us a Girl Cyclops.

All for now. If I get a chance I’ll see if I can share more later on.
Mid-Ohio Con – Aftermath
I hit up the Mid-Ohio con a couple the previous weekend, and was selling some photos and comics. It was a slow show. Bit slower then I would have liked, but I made money back on my table and for some food, so it’s not all bad. Thinking how I could do at a show that actually has people at it on both days. Anyways here are some photos from the show.

The con was held at the convention center in downtown Columbus, OH. Much smaller of a venue then the Wizard World Chicago show I previously attended. The entire thing was about the size of the artist alley area in Chicago. But they still had some nice draws there like Chris Claremont, Alan Davis (don’t ask who he his cause I don’t know either. Basically, he’s a big shot who doesn’t normally come to shows), and the Batmobile was there! Lou “The Hulk” Ferrigno was there as well, but he’s at any comic book convention. So no shock there.
And of course we have people in costume.

Had to get a shot of the guy as the Tom Baker Doctor Who. He had a little remote control for K-9 as well. And when that wasnt fast enough just tied a string to him and fulled him. Also the bottom group won the costume contest. There were others there, but nothing too exciting.
All for now, I’ll have more to share from the trip later on.
Wizard World Chicago Costumes – Part 3
Over the weekend was the Wizard World Chicago 2008 comic book convention. I decided to bring the camera along and take of photos of all the people who dress up for the show. There were a lot of great costumes so I’m going to need to break this up into several posts throughout the week.
Part 3 is here! This final part will cover movie characters, mainly Star Wars.

A Tour of Wizard World Chicago
This past weekend one of the largest comic book conventions in the country took place in Chicago. I’ve attended the Wizard World Chicago convention for the last 9 years. 5 of those years I was attending as a fan and the other 4 I was attending as an exhibitor selling my comic book and photography. Most of my family and friends know I go to this show, but they don’t really know what goes on over the weekend. This past show I decided to take my camera with and take some images to help give an idea of what the Wizard World convention is like.
I’m going to start at the beginning. Here is an image of what you would see when first entering the show.

All of the big comic books companies (Marvel, DC, Image, etc.) set up booths right at the front doors to promote any upcoming movies, large comic events, and hold signings by some of the most popular artists and writers who work on their books. Farther in the distance are smaller booths for independent comic book publishers and an autograph area with minor celebs like Lou Ferrigno, Johnny Fairplay and any number of former pro wrestler and/or star wars actors.
The next major area at the convention are the vendors. Half the show floor is dominated by a variety of booths selling comic books, movie posters, toys, swords, knives, bootleg movies, patches, collectibles, t-shirts and much much more. The show tends to not focus on comic books, and covers pop culture, science-fiction, and cult tv/movies.

Fans looking through boxes of comics.

Variety of t-shirts on display.

Pez at one of the collectible booths.
The last section on the main floor is Artist Alley. This is where a variety of professional and aspiring artists come to sell their art, comic books, prints, and to do commissions and sketches. Personally this is my favorite area of the show. There is wealth of talent here, and a great opportunity to chit chat with the artists and find new things.

By now you’ve walked around for a couple hours. Hunger is setting in. There are several places around the show to buy over priced, poorly cooked food that’s been sitting out under the heat lamp too long. Best to bring your own food.

Ok, I’m bringing up the food just to show that photo of storm troopers eating. We thought it was amusing. At any show you can pretty much expect to see a small army of storm troopers walking the floor.

Along with the storm troopers there are lots of people in costume. Just an other reason I love to go to this show. I’ve gone in costume several times in the past. It’s a blast. Although it’s a bit difficult to get around the show if you have a really cool outfit because people will stop and take your photo every 20 feet. There are a lot of people dressed up this year. I took a ton of photos of people I saw in costume this year, and I’ll be putting those up in the next few parts.

After all of this we have more show! In an other section of the convention center there are a lectures, discussion groups, and movies held in a series of ballrooms. I didn’t take any photos of these, I don’t normally head to this area of the show. Outside the ballrooms is a signing area. this is where they hold signing for some of the top names in the comics business. The line of people waiting to get a signature from painter Alex Ross is below.
