I was about 13 when the Power Rangers came to TV in the states. I grew up with my mom’s love of Godzilla movies that were on the TV anytime they happened to be on. So instantly I accepted the cheese filled Power Rangers for the light and dorky entertainment that it was. At the same time, I instantly felt too old for it.
Airing at the same timeline as Power Rangers was some of the powerhouse shows from WB that were going to last in our hearts and minds to this day. Batman the Animated Series and Animaniacs came to the world and didn’t really dumb down or pander to kids, where I felt that the plot lines for Power Rangers were almost aggressively stupid.
That said, while I never really connected as a fan, I did like the fights with someone in the big rubber suit. Just something fun, silly and theatrical about it. It’s a tv show, I know there is a certain level of cheapness about it. But there was something really charming and creative in it as well.
