Gem City Comic Con
Back from Dayton, OH and Gem City Comic Con. This was my first time out at this venue and had a pretty good time. Gem City was an other convention I had wanted to join in a couple years in a row now, and wasn’t fast enough on the trigger to get in. I got a little faster and gained entrance into this fun event. I was excited to get to sit near Archie and Tick artists. Especially with The Tick remaining one of my favorite comic series.
Also making this convention special was my friend, Jen, coming up from Cincinnati to help me out. A long time friend that I normally only get to see when I do conventions in her town came up to help me out this weekend, and was awesome enough to bring me healthy lunches! She’s amazing and a good friend. It was also nice to have some one there to watch the table while I was off giving a panel.
This marks my third time doing a panel at a convention. Second time talking about printing. Turn up was nice and interested in the topic. Talked to a couple people later during the day. Hopefully it helped them out with their projects. Also, if you have questions about printing books, posters, etc., let me know. I love helping people get their passion off the ground.
I donated some art to the Hero Imitative auction. I opted for what I thought would do the best, and gave the original art for the Batman v Superman version of Armored Batman above. Also I wanted to give that since it’s a sketch that I was never really going to put into a print. I was glad to hear that it went for $38. Yeah, I like to find out how they do at auction, and happy that any small amount I can help raise for the Hero Initiative.
I feel I’d be remiss if I don’t discuss the weather. It was beyond strange across the midwest. Family back home seemed to have similar experiences in Chicago that I had in Dayton. Extreme high winds that suddenly break out into mini blizzards with white out conditions in the start of April. It was intense. What I thought was interesting was that Dayton doesn’t have posts for the signal lights down town. They are suspended by cables. Driving back to the hotel and watching the signal lights swing 100+ degrees in the wind was terrifying thinking they could snap off the cables. But they held strong.
I didn’t push to hard on commissions this weekend, but still had some fun ones to work on. Mostly Master Chief and an Arbiter from Halo, and Pearl from Steven Universe. A fun variety to sketch. I’ll post them up as larger files on Tumblr later in the week as part of the new art every day of the year project.
No postcard from Gem City yet. The show was constantly busy and with my friend visiting, I didn’t have time to sketch it. But I’ll do a post con postcard this week. It is going to an other friend who I’m hoping to cheer up a little.
